A Must Read

In this writing activity, Lucas was asked to choose a quotation from the book, “A Wizard of Earthsea,” by Ursula Le Guin. After choosing the quotation, he was tasked to share what he thought it meant, and how he may relate it to his own life.

The novel, “A Wizard of Earthsea” is a story about sorcery and fantasy. It is about a boy named Ged who wanted to be a good sorcerer. But Ged released a shadow because he wanted to prove that he was better than his classmate. So Ged had to chase the shadow and defeat it.

In chapter two of the book, Ged goes with Ogion to learn sorcery. But he noticed that Ogion was not teaching him any sorcery. He ran into the enchantress’s daughter and she fooled him into summoning the shadow. Ged was successful in summoning the shadow and felt scared. Then Ogion comes in to chase away the shadow. He talked to Ged for a while about his carelessness and told him “… Before you speak or do you must know the price that is to pay!”

The quotation reminds me that for every wrong thing I do, there is always a consequence. So it now reminds me that I have to be careful in everything I do. I need to try and not be careless when I am taking a test.

The novel, “A Wizard of Earthsea” is a great book because it has a lot of adventure, lessons and excitement. Kids would get a lot of teachings and advice from reading it.
