Opinion Essay on Stealing

As a post reading activity for the book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, James wrote an opinion essay on stealing which became a hard-to-break habit of Hugo Cabret, the main protagonist in the story.  The said activity was part of his written language development. He wrote his main ideas by the help of a graphic organizer. James was advised to use signal words to achieve cohesion of his paragraphs.  This is an edited version of his work.

Question: Hugo Cabret stole food because he would die out of hunger. Do you think stealing is considered when your life is at stake – like in the case of Hugo?

Stealing is bad even if you die out of hunger.
First, if you steal you will end up in hell. The Bible says that if you steal you will go to hell. Because of this, I never steal.
Last, when you steal, something from others, they might badly need the thing stolen for their survival. For example, when my friend stole medicine from my other friend, he had a heart attack.
Therefore, you should not steal for your own sake.

James, a grade 6 student, shows enthusiasm in reading the Invention of Hugo Cabret, for the book was not only told in words but also in more than 300 pictures. James appreciates story plots that make him analyze and predict outcomes.
