SEMINAR on DYSLEXIA slated on May 10 in UP

Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects at least 10-15% of the entire school population. Children with this type of condition experience difficulty learning to read, spell and write. Assumed to be uninterested in school or labeled as stupid and lazy, these students often fall through the cracks and as a result, continue to perform poorly in school. Through this seminar on May 10, 2008, entitled, "DYSLEXIA SCREENING for READERS K-3," the Reading Education Area of the College of Education, University of the Philippines – Diliman, in cooperation with the Philippine Dyslexia Foundation, wishes to equip all teachers with the skills necessary to help identify – early on – these children needing specialized instruction. Dina Ocampo teaches at the UP College of Education and serves as president of the Board of Trustees of Wordlab School. She researches on literacy development and difficulties among bilingual children. Recently, she was awarded one of the outstanding women in the nation’s service as a recognition of her advocacies on dyslexia and for more systematic and literature-based reading education programs in Philippine Schools.

Rhea Abat has been a teacher at Wordlab School for 7 years and has extensive experience in providing individualized and classroom instruction for children with learning difficulties. At present, she heads the English department and is involved in the design and implementation of the school’s reading, writing and study skills programs. She also provides training for parents and teachers, in and out of Metro Manila. She served as a member of the steering committee and was a presenter of the Pan-Asian Learning Difficulties Conference held last October 2007.

Wordlab School, Inc. recently held the 1st Pan-Asian Learning Difficulties Conference from October 25 to 27, 2007 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Ortigas Center, Quezon City, Philippines. Educators, doctors, and practitioners from the field took part in this prestigious three-day event. The conference theme, “Learning Difficulties: An Asian Perspective” enabled experts to exchange their experiences about the understanding, policies and advocacy initiatives, intervention and therapy of children with learning difficulties in Asia. Speakers from the Philippines, United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Lebanon, Bahrain, Kuwait, Australia, and China shared their expertise and knowledge on the assessment and instruction of students with LD. The Alabang Reading Clinic of Wordlab School Inc. will hold the Second Parent Education Seminar on Saturday, 8th of December 2007 from 4 to 7 pm. It will take place at the Wordlab Alabang Reading Clinic, Unit 505, Page 1 Building, Acacia Asve., Alabang, Muntinlupa City. Invited speaker, Ms. Hazelle Preclaro, Ma. Ed. will continue her lecture on “Helping My Child Cope with His Learning Difficulty (LD).” Ms. Preclaro who received her Master’s Degree in Reading Education at Columbia University, New York, USA, is currently an assistant professor at the Reading Department of the College of Education, University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Invited speaker was Ms. Hazelle Preclaro, Ma. Ed. Ms. Preclaro is the Executive Director of Wordlab School, Inc. She received a master’s degree in Reading Education from Columbia University in New York. She is currently an assistant professor in the Reading Department, College of Education, University of the Philippines, Diliman. Parents of students enrolled in Wordlab attended the seminar.

Dear Friends,

Everyday, we see our son agonize over the lack of understanding of his teachers about his dyslexia and its effect of how he learns. He's a smart 13 yr old who is a gifted musician and an avid boxer. But he needs more explicit and systematic instruction to learn his school subject matter content because dyslexia affects how he perceives language in both written and oral forms. The frustration he lives with everyday as he attends one of the best boys' schools in the country is hard for any parent to bear.

The most crucial factors for the successful education of children with dyslexia and learning difficulties are better informed and compassionate teachers and schools. This is why our whole family has thrown all its support behind our young man and for the Pan Asian Learning Difficulties Conference in order to advocate among teachers and schools about dyslexia and learning difficulties and how these affect the learning of otherwise very clever and intelligent children and adults.
