Flying a Kite

Flying a kite is fun. You can fly a kite with your Dad or friends. Here are two tips about flying a kite.

The first tip is to check the weather. The wind should be smooth and steady. The leaves in the trees should not fall but should flutter in the wind.

The second tip is to look for a place that is open and wide. Examples are parks, the beach and hilltops. You should avoid the streets. That is because electric wires and telephone wires could be dangerous.

Erika likes skating and biking. She enjoys reading funny stories.

SEMINAR on DYSLEXIA slated on May 10 in UP

Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects at least 10-15% of the entire school population. Children with this type of condition experience difficulty learning to read, spell and write. Assumed to be uninterested in school or labeled as stupid and lazy, these students often fall through the cracks and as a result, continue to perform poorly in school. Through this seminar on May 10, 2008, entitled, "DYSLEXIA SCREENING for READERS K-3," the Reading Education Area of the College of Education, University of the Philippines – Diliman, in cooperation with the Philippine Dyslexia Foundation, wishes to equip all teachers with the skills necessary to help identify – early on – these children needing specialized instruction. The program details are as follows:

Dina Ocampo teaches at the UP College of Education and serves as president of the Board of Trustees of Wordlab School. She researches on literacy development and difficulties among bilingual children. Recently, she was awarded one of the outstanding women in the nation’s service as a recognition of her advocacies on dyslexia and for more systematic and literature-based reading education programs in Philippine Schools.

Rhea Abat has been a teacher at Wordlab School for 7 years and has extensive experience in providing individualized and classroom instruction for children with learning difficulties. At present, she heads the English department and is involved in the design and implementation of the school’s reading, writing and study skills programs. She also provides training for parents and teachers, in and out of Metro Manila. She served as a member of the steering committee and was a presenter of the Pan-Asian Learning Difficulties Conference held last October 2007.

The Simple Life

The “Ox Cart Man” written by Donald Hall (and illustrated by Barbara Cooney) is a simple story about a family that makes things that they have in the year before winter. After making them, the ox cart man goes to town and sells them. Then, after selling all the stuff, including his ox cart and his ox, he buys things that are needed in the house and his family needs to use. Then he goes home and gives his family the things he bought from town. And then, they start working all over again.

What I learned from the story was that people in the past lived a simple life, which is like a cycle. Compared to our lives now, things are easier because we can earn more money and it takes a short time for us to go to one area or another. But I prefer the simple days like the ox cart man’s time because they are not lazy and make things with the stuff they had like brooms, woolen blankets and mittens.

Shiloh, the Good Dog

The title of the book that I read was Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. The story took place in West Virginia in the present time.

The main characters are Marty Preston, Shiloh and Judd Travers. Marty is 11 years old. He lives in Friendly in West Virginia with his parents, and sisters, Dara Lyn and Becky. He is an animal lover. He has a 24 caliber rifle but he doesn’t use it because he doesn’t kill animals. Shiloh is a beagle. He is a good hunting dog but he is shy. He runs away from his owner because his owner is mistreating him. Judd Travers is the owner of Shiloh.

My favorite part in the story is when Shiloh was attacked by a German shepherd. Because of it, Marty’s secret was revealed. What I learned from the story is to work hard for your goals.

The Rescue Helicopter

The rescue helicopter has many uses. First, the rescue helicopter can be used to save people trapped in a burning building. Second, the rescue helicopter can be used to help people who fell in the water from a sinking boat. Last, it can also be used to help carry food, medicine and other supplies to people after a storm like a hurricane or typhoon.
